Veteran Jeffersonville police captain enters Clark County sheriff’s race

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A longtime Jeffersonville police captain is running in the Republican primary for Clark County sheriff.

Capt. Kenny Kavanaugh, a 32-year veteran, announced his candidacy this week, saying his decision is rooted in service and leadership.

"Running for sheriff is both an honor and a commitment,” Kavanaugh said. “It’s about leadership, professionalism and integrity that builds and fosters communal trust."

Kavanaugh stepped down as chief of the Jeffersonville Police Department last August after 10 years. 

Kavanaugh said he would focus on accountability within the sheriff’s office, responsible use of taxpayer dollars and community-centered policing.

His wife, Lenae Guilfoyle Kavanaugh, said his leadership style emphasizes fairness and compassion.

“I know he will lead the sheriff’s office with community at the center of every decision,” Guilfoyle Kavanaugh said.

Kavanaugh said he believes new leadership can bring a fresh perspective to the agency while strengthening public confidence in the sheriff’s office.
