Former Jeffersonville police chief running for Clark County Sheriff

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Former Jeffersonville police chief Kenny Kavanaugh has announced he’s entered the race in the Republican primary for the Clark County Sheriff.

Kavanaugh, who’s currently a captain in the Jeffersonville Police Department, stepped down from his role as chief in August amid ‘ongoing financial pressures.’ He served for 10 years as chief and has a total of 32 years of police service, according to a press release.

He announced his candidacy for sheriff on Feb. 6, nearly six months after stepping down.

“Filing to run for the Sheriff of Clark County is first an honor and secondly a commitment that carries the willingness to serve. The passion is from the heart to meet the expectations of the people of Clark County exhibited by daily leadership and professionalism, and integrity which builds and fosters communal trust,” Kavanaugh said in a press release.

In the press release, Kananaugh’s team says he’s hoping to introduce new leadership to allow for a new perspective while supporting the mission of public safety.

Kavanaugh will face off against Republican incumbent Scottie Maples. Ed Byers, who Maples won against in 2022, is running as a Democrat. Tim Deeringer and Dwight Ingle are also running as Democrats, according to the Clark County Clerk’s office.
